By definition, a hobby is a regular activity outside of one’s profession, done primarily for enjoyment. Not by definition, hobbies produce and develop new interests and new areas of learning and enjoyment. A true hobbyist, I assert, is somebody who thinks better, and broadens his or her realm of wisdom and depth of character.
Taking that a step further, the best “professional” remains a hobbyist at heart. Whatever we do for a living, we do better if the paycheck merely adds a benefit to our passion.
To advance that theory even further, imagine a job that you simply love with all your heart, like your spouse and children. That would be a fantastic hobby, and it would make a great job.
A hobby has several advantages that benefit mankind. Those benefits include a better product and workmanship, new techniques, artistry, materials quality, and individuality that do not exist in mass market items.
If you are getting ahead of me, you already see that a hobbyist is a craftsman or artist who works for goodness rather than money, but there are no limits to a hobby. It can easily provide money!
One other element of hobbies is the maintenance of outmoded, old-fashioned, and nearly forgotten talents. “Learning to do it the old way” keeps the arts, crafts, building techniques, processes and tools alive. It can also help to preserve old items that would otherwise be quickly forgotten and relegated to museums.
As Ipsoscope.com develops, we will explore a thousand hobbies. If I live long enough. It would be fun to hear about your particular hobby (or hobbies.) Jot a comment to let me know what you love, and maybe add some tips and techniques of your own when I touch on something you love!
