Everything defining United States politics has been infected with generations of corruption. Not that it was easy in the first place!
According to Webster’s Dictionary, 1840, democracy means the people vote for the plan or legislation, while republicans vote to elect people to hash it out for them. In some form, most of us still consider it that way. At the core of this conundrum lie the answers to diseases plaguing our system. When you recognize that Party Names mean nothing, the problems become obvious.
Consider the roots of the Democratic Party, and you will discover the Party goals from the start: expansion of land, avoidance of war at (almost) all costs, cheap labor, “soft” money, and centralized government. The republicans (and Whigs, briefly) grew on stabilizing domestic affairs, strong defensive military, fiscal responsibilities, fair wages and strong competition, “hard” currency, and State’s rights.
We reached our current condition slowly. The first and only Party change came about because the Democrats felt cheated at their ports, and they needed their slaves. (One Slave State ceded from the Union in the 1840s over tariffs and fees — not slavery!) Democrats strongly needed slaves, and the new Whigs held no strong opinion one way or the other. The Republican Party took its name from the already existing Constitutional Authority, including the right and authority to end slavery. (That is the origin of “strict construction.” Our Constitution means exactly what it says.) We heavily chose Abe Lincoln.
It’s my strongly held opinion that almost nothing about this has changed much, except the degree of corruption and self-service. Where is President Trump in this? He’s a bit of a blend! Expansionist, striving to end war, goals of a powerful defense. He leans to hard money and strong credit, fair trade, integrity, honesty, People’s rights, then State’s Rights, and he has no tact whatsoever. Through Elon Musk and DOGE he is pointing to some massive spending reductions. A couple trillion saved without decreasing any valid operation of government, though, isn’t for everyone.
Democrats and Big Business Plantation ops in Third World nations offer the strictest Platform ever. “We oppose everything Trump says. That is what we support.”
