According to the Westminster catechism, man’s chief end is “to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” You will get no argument from me! People struggle with those words, especially when they are all strung together like that.
The words glory, God, enjoyment, and forever all fall outside routine conversation for most of us. We do not talk like that around the coffeepot or in the student union. People seldom even understand what each of the words really mean, especially when they are all strung together like that.
“IAM,” God said, is his name. His being, creations, thoughts, and capacities fill books. His love is beyond our understanding. Glory is the full weight and magnificence of God in his being and in each of his works, in creation, life, His image, and the physical birth of His Son. In fact, the Hebrew word for glory, kavod, means honorable and majestic, with a sense of weighty. In Greek, doxa fills in for everything we call glory. Enjoy means to fill with joy.
The point is, all of us can sense an increasing love and amazement for God’s Glory simply by living and being present in it. Even if we doubt God’s presence. That should lead to enjoyment of God that clearly lasts forever. There are new categories of amazing available in each moment. They reveal themselves as soon as I get out of my way.
